The effective school vacation time can be slightly longer than the official term dates would indicate:
The first or last day of a school term might be used as a
student free day (also called a professional
learning day).
Special student free days might be needed by a
new school at the beginning of the year.
Special student free days might be needed at the
end of one year and at the beginning of the following year when
a merger has resulted in a
new school.
Building activity can cause a
slight delay in the commencement of a term for an individual
school.
